Description

This course is designed to develop each student’s knowledge and skills in relation to the theory and practice of exercise physiology. The lecture sessions will cover, in detail, the energy systems as they underpin health and performance. The laboratory sessions will provide students with the knowledge, time and opportunity to develop hands-on practical skills for fitness assessments both in the field and laboratory - essential for every exercise physiologist. In addition students will gain experience and skills in reading and critiquing research papers, analysing data using statistics as well as writing research papers.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, successful students will be able to:
1. Explain the energy requirements and sources of human energy production during anaerobic and aerobic exercise.
2. Discuss the acute and chronic responses of the body to exercise in health and performance contexts.
3. Critique and apply a variety of assessment tools for fitness testing in the field and laboratory
4. Recommend appropriate training methods for supporting athletes from different populations to enhance performance.
5. Analyse data collected in laboratory sessions and effectively report results.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Laboratory report 26 Apr 2024 30% Students use and analyse class data to write a laboratory report using their own research aim. Students to incorporate knowledge from class and their own literature search to introduce the topic and compare to their results in the discussion. To be presented either as an A0 or A1 size Poster or a Journal Article and to include: an introduction, method results, discussion, take home message/conclusion and references. This will be due by 5pm.
In-class assessment 31 May 2024 30% Assignments will be set each week to assess this course component. The tasks for each week will be shown on each LEARN page. Requirements will involve a variety of assigned activities to support learning for the class. This assignment should be submitted with the portfolio in the same document (at the back of the document after the portfolio of tests). This will be due by 5pm.
Practical assessment portfolio 31 May 2024 40% Students to learn and lead an assessment for 5 exercise physiology tests, submitting a portfolio containing a written description of each test, a rationale for its use and a protocol and range of tests that might be used as alternatives. Students will also create a video showing themselves conducting the 5 selected tests on an athlete. The portfolio should be submitted via Turnitin and contain a link to the video (one edited video showing all 5 tests). The video should be uploaded to a private YouTube link or similar. This will be due by 5pm.


*Emergency provisions: In the case of an emergency that affects the whole course, the Course Coordinator, in consultation with the Dean,  may change the nature, weighting and timing of assessments, e.g. tests and examination may be replaced with assignments of the same weight or different weight at a different time and/or date (which, under certain circumstances, may be outside the prescribed course dates).  The ‘Special consideration’ process will also be used for unforeseen circumstances that adversely affect the academic performance of students individually. The usual grounds for this are described in the UC policy ‘Special Consideration Procedures and Guidelines’, and personal circumstances due to a wider emergency event may also qualify.
