Description

An advanced course on methods for digitally processing signals. Practical methods of designing digital signal filters, especially those with finite impulse response, including implementation on devices with finite precision. Statistical signal processing and estimation. Multidimensional signals and signal processing. The multidimensional Fourier transform and applications. Time-frequency analysis and the wavelet transform.

Topics covered include:
• A thorough appraisal of aliasing, including bandpass sampling.
• Practical methods of designing digital filters, especially those with finite impulse response.
• Implementation of filters on devices with finite precision.  
• Multi-rate signal processing: the manipulation of sampling rates and filters for faster DSP.  
• Two-dimensional spectra and the 2D Fourier transform.  
• Applications of the 2D Fourier transform to image processing.  
• Statistical processing of signals.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, the student will:

1. Understand sampling and aliasing in both the signal and frequency domains
2. Be able to design FIR filters using various methods
3. Understand the effects of finite precision on digital filters
4. Be able to apply multi-rate methods for efficient DSP
5. Understand two-dimensional spectra and the 2D Fourier transform
6. Be able to apply the 2D Fourier transform to problems in image processing
7. Understand and apply the 1D wavelet transform
8. Understand and apply statistical methods to signal processing
