Advanced study of generic core theory and foundations of specialist teaching common to professionals working in the areas of: Early Intervention; Deaf and Hearing Impairment; Blind and Vision Impairment; Learning and Behaviour; Autism Spectrum Disorder; Complex Educational Needs, and Gifted and Talented.
Students who complete this paper successfully should be able to demonstrate an understanding of:1. Core background knowledge relevant to the field of special and inclusive education, including: the history of special and inclusive education in New Zealand and internationally; models of disability and diversity; relevant curricula, legislation, documents, and policies; the significance of the Treaty of Waitangi, biculturalism and multiculturalism in special and inclusive education contexts.2. Skills, values, attitudes, and practices needed for professionals to work individually and interprofessionally with children and students with diverse learning needs and their families and whānau, including: culturally appropriate practices; learning theories and practices; assessment theories and practices; evidence-based interventions and individualised education planning, evidence-based practices, and reading the professional research literature.3. Working as an effective and collaborative team member with parents and whānau in different cultural and educational contexts.4. Evidence-based, ethical and reflective practice and an orientation to learn with, from, and about other specialist areas through interprofessional communities of practice.
