Description

This course follows on from second-year phonetics and phonology, covering selected advanced topics and current research in phonetics and phonological theory.

Listening to speech feels like about the easiest thing we do, but the separate operations it consists of –such as segmenting an utterance spoken as a continuous stream into its discrete components, or selecting words from among a vocabulary extending into the hundreds of thousands – are highly complex. The efficiency with which these operations are carried out derives from the fact that they are, at all points, exquisitely adapted to the characteristics of the mother tongue. This process of adaptation begins in the earliest stages of listening, in infancy. In this course, recent evidence from listening experiments will be reviewed, with particular focus on what the evidence tells us about the universal architecture of listening, and the cross-language variations that it requires.

Learning Outcomes

As a student in this course you will acquire skills in the following areas: critical reading and writing, problem solving, presenting research, and phonetic and phonological analysis. By the end of the course you should be able to identify certain phonological patterns and some of the influencing factors. You will also have the opportunity to practice presenting your research, and should be able to put together a well reasoned and clearly presented short presentation on your research project.
