Description

A survey of techniques and trends in post-tonal music, with an emphasis on present-day repertoire. The course aims to give a global perspective on the plurality of evolving cultures of contemporary art music that exist today. From this perspective the student can take their first steps, or further steps, towards identifying their own unique voice and finding their place in the world of contemporary music. Advanced concepts in musical materials, transformation, development, handling of form, and instrumental performance techniques, are also taught.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Mentor Group 15% Share and respond to work in progress as part of a sub-group of students from all levels.
Workshop 20% Work with a performer or performers to present a work-in-progress reading of at least one composition during the course of the semester. You must briefly introduce your work and be ready to discuss / field any questions. The assessment includes the workshop itself along with a short written commentary summarizing any feedback you received from performers, mentors, or teachers, and actions taken.
Portfolio 65% A collection of completed works composed during the semester, supported by recordings from composition workshops where available. The portfolio will normally include three compositions, but this can vary according to length and complexity. Generally it should add up to about 10-12 minutes of music.
