Innovation Behaviour in Business: Fostering Intra- and Entrepreneurship

Course Overview:

Delve deep into the world of innovation and its crucial role within a business context. Further expanding on current learnings regarding innovation and the methods used in organisations to foster innovation, this course offers a comprehensive exploration of diverse innovation types, the inherent traits of successful innovators, and the significance of community and connection in fostering innovation. Emphasis is placed on the behavioral, cognitive, and risk/return aspects that influence the identification and realization of organizational innovation. Students will have the knowledge and expertise to spearhead personal innovation initiatives and design, refine, and implement effective innovation strategies within organizations by developing an innovation strategy upon completion of the course.

Learning Outcomes

Distinguish various categories/types of innovative business products and services.
Determine and evaluate the risk and return metrics of specific innovation strategies.
Identify cognitive instances of personal innovative behavioural tendencies.
Conduct self-evaluations to pinpoint strengths in innovation preferences.
Recognize and evaluate the societal elements vital for ushering in changes in the innovation process.
Employ unique approaches for both uncovering innovation prospects and driving innovation.
Gauge their personal innovation capacities and formulate a bespoke innovation strategy.

Doug Steiner

Doug is a Canadian entrepreneur. He has focused his academic and business efforts on the design and use of business models pertaining to valuing and monetizing data. He is an Edmund Hillary Fellow and moved with his wife Jasmine Herlt to Aotearoa New Zealand in October 2023.

He has started, run, and sold several businesses: In pricing and trading of financial information, in analysing and visualizing large data sets, in designing and deploying consumer and institutional transaction systems, in designing and running financial marketplaces, and in using behavioural economics to change consumer behaviour.

He now advises organisations in government, finance, media and technology.

Doug wrote a monthly column in The Globe and Mail’s Report on Business Magazine from 2002 until 2009 commenting on industry trends, economic analysis, and investor psychology and continues to contribute to Canada’s National newspaper, The Globe and Mail, and The New York Times as an opinion writer.

He is currently a member of the CEO’s Advisory Council for the Ontario Securities Commission, and a past member of the Dean’s Advisory Board for University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, Thomson Reuters Technology Advisory Board and served as an independent Director of Payments Canada.

In 2016 Doug was inducted in the Investment Industry Hall of Fame by the Investment Industry Association of Canada for his pioneering work in computing technology and its application to data analysis, investment pricing and trading.

His focus in Aotearoa emphasises his skills to maximise impact in the following areas: increasing the availability of career-relevant post-secondary education, advising and investing in NZ-based SMEs to expand business, and not-for-profit operational strategy and development.
