Advanced Public Law will examine theories of public law scholarship in key areas of the discipline. It will examine the primary materials and specialist writings such as: parliamentary sovereignty, the rule of law, judicial review, independence of the judiciary, parliamentary privilege and the Treaty of Waitangi. In addition, students will conduct research on an approved public law topic, write an essay of 3,000 words and deliver an oral presentation to the class on their research.

Lectures in Term One will be interactive, with students broken into groups for class presentations. In addition, students will conduct research on an approved public law topic, write an essay of 4,000 words and each student will present his/her paper in class during Term Two.One of the course objectives is to promote the ability and confidence of students to make formal class presentations and navigate Q&A sessions.

The assessment may be by way of an In Class Test (worth 50%), and a research paper (4,000 words) and presentation (worth 50%).The assessment will be confirmed in the first week of lectures.
