This course examines contemporary aspects of globalization by focusing on new forms of economic activity, consumption and social life. Attention is given to the processes which are transforming places, whether urban or rural, and to the people within them. Examples will be drawn from within and beyond New Zealand.
Through lectures and seminars, we will explore how processes of globalisation have impacted people and places, both for better and for worse. We will consider various ways of understanding globalisation and examine a range of responses that have emerged to it.
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Describe and conceptualise the diverse impacts globalisation is having upon places and everyday life Understand how globalisation processes operate across different scales (e.g. the local, regional, national and international) Identify and critically evaluate the key arguments in a human geography research article
