Description

Forests of the world, wood energy, conservation and environment.

The objective of the course is to look at forests and forestry in an historical and a global context.

Issues discussed will include the interaction between people and forests over the ages; the distribution and classification of forests; the environmental value of forests; forest products; wood as a source of energy; principles of silviculture; and forests and an introduction to forestry in New Zealand.

Timetable Note

This course is block-taught over an seven working day period (Monday 28th November - Thursday 1 December, then Monday 5th to Wednesday 7th December). There will be three hours lectures and a one hour tutorial each day.

There is a compulsory one day (9-5) field trip on Thursday 8th December which takes the class to Peel Forest. Details of the timing and location will be confirmed at the commencement of the course. Transportation is provided by the School of Forestry.

Assessment

Assessment comprises:
• exercises set within the tutorial sessions based on the days' learning (7 exercises).
• a field trip report
• a major essay
