An introduction to the changing representations of the child and childhood in children's literature form the late 18th century to the present.
This paper will read children’s literature from Britain and America. It will introduce students to the idea of the child and the experience of childhood from the nineteenth century to the present. Changing representations of the child in children’s literature will be examined and these will be linked to cultural context and contemporary ideologies.
Course aims:to consider the relationship between the language and themes of children’s literature and that of ‘adult’ literature;to investigate connections between changing cultural attitudes towards children; and childhood and developments in children’s literature;to introduce a range of theories to the reading of texts;to promote the skills of critical reading and interpretation.
