Description

Risk concepts; context and perceptions; risk identification, analysis, evaluation and treatment; quantitative and qualitative risk analysis; ethical issues and risk communication; applications and case studies.

This course aims to develop a clear understanding of risk management concepts and processes to analyse complex problems. The procedures of risk assessment and evaluation are explicated with various applications in, among others, structural, fire, transportation and infrastructure engineering. The paradigm of risk communication is studied.

No pre-requisite knowledge in these areas is essential, but a sound knowledge of the basic principles and methods of probability and statistics will be beneficial.

Learning Outcomes

On the completion of this course, students should be able to:
1) have a solid grounding in the basic concepts, processes and tools of risk management;
2) apply their knowledge of risk assessment and evaluation, and
3) understand the principles and practice of risk treatment and communication.

1. You cannot pass this course unless you achieve a mark of at least 40% in Assignments and the Final Exam. A student who narrowly fails to achieve 40% in one, but who performs very well in the others, may be eligible for a pass in the course.
2. All assignments must be submitted by the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted. If a student is unable to complete and submit an assignment by the deadline due to personal circumstances beyond their control they should discuss this with the lecturer involved as soon as possible.
3. Students in this course can apply for special consideration provided they have completed at least 50% of course material.
4. Some assignments can be done individually or in pairs. If done in pairs a single submission for marking is required and both students receive the same mark. It is important that both students play an equal role in completing the assessment as the internal assessment is designed to prepare you for the formal assessments.

NB. Submission deadlines: Failure to attend a presentation or submit an assignment on the dates
given will result in zero being recorded for that element of the course unless the course  coordinator gives prior approval.
