Description

Building performance and its relationship to design, construction, occupant behaviour and the environment. Building performance regulations and the regulatory environment. Failure, success and value of building projects. Building performance assessment. Roles and responsibilities and liabilities. Collaboration and communication with project stakeholders.

This interdisciplinary course covers concepts related to multiple dimensions of building performance, including functional, economic and sustainability performance. It examines drivers of building design, including building regulations, and the language and objectives of architects, engineers, developers, owners, occupants and regulators. It also introduces collaboration and communication in multidisciplinary teams.

The course covers the following topics:

 Architectural design principles.
 Building functional, economic and sustainability performance objectives and metrics.
 Building regulations.
 Material, energy and water use.
 Carbon emissions.
 Building economics.
 Collaboration, communication and problem-solving in multidisciplinary teams.

Learning Outcomes

A student who successfully completes this course should be able to apply knowledge of building performance and multidisciplinary design to collaborate effectively with stakeholders in a building design project, through understanding:

 Key concepts related to building costs and economics, architecture, functional performance, sustainability and human wellbeing.
 Success and failure factors of building design projects.
 Requirements of selected building regulations.
 Integrated building design.
