Description

This course provides participants with opportunities to describe and critique the framework which makes up the Positive Behaviour Support model for providing behaviour and learning support to children, adolescents and adults in various settings. The application of this model to the Aotearoa/ New Zealand context is a feature of this course.

Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:
1. Examine, describe and evaluate the theoretical models and elements which contribute to positive behaviour support including applied behaviour analysis, ecological, indigenous and social learning theories.
2. Examine and evaluate New Zealand government policies applicable to Positive Behaviour Support.
3. Examine, describe and critically evaluate culturally responsive and strengths-based approaches applicable to children, youth and adults across a variety of settings.
4. Examine, describe and critically evaluate how inclusion, self-determination, and life style enhancement are foundations of the positive behaviour support model.
5. Examine and describe the ethical issues related to behaviour change of children, youth and adults.
6. Examine, describe and evaluate the skills of leadership in terms of system change and mentoring peers.  
7. Locate, summarise, and critique the evidence-based literature relevant to Positive Behaviour Support.

Group and individual assignments will be used to evaluate achievement against the learning outcomes.  There are three assessment activities.
