Description

Study of phonetic and phonemic transcription using the International Phonetic Alphabet and the relationship between articulatory phonetics, acoustic phonetics and speech perception.

Weekly Tutorials 30%
Assignment 10 May 2013 20% This assignment assesses students' ability to (i) recognise and explain differences in speech sounds of different dialects of English, and (ii) transcribe spoken passages with the IPA
Group Class Presentation 24 May 2012 10% Students will be divided into groups for this assessment. Each group will be assigned a journal article (either a research report or a discussion paper). The group will present the findings of the paper to the class, showing how the theory covered in lectures may be applied in the clinical context.
Class test 31 May 2013 40% The class test will assess students' understanding of the concepts of acoustic and articulatory phonetics, as well as their ability to relate these to the clinical context
