Description

Students taking this course will critically examine the concept of community engagement within tertiary studies and how this concept is being implemented in Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, U.K., and U.S. tertiary institutions. This course will integrate academic content on community engagement with students' previous field experiences in response to the Christchurch earthquakes. This will provide students with an overview of how many different fields are contributing to our understanding of, response to, and mitigation of earthquake hazards in the Christchurch area.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of CHCH101, students will be able to:
1. apply theory critically to analyse community engagement
2. evaluate the impact of their own community engagement
3. use a self-reflective approach to devising, developing and presenting personally relevant assessment products.

To measure students' achievement of the learning outcomes of CHCH101 and to determine the grade they earn for the course, the following Assessment Tasks are to be completed (criteria for each task will be provided during the course).

Weekly Contributions/Online Forums 20% Weekly contributions to face to face or online forums about the readings. Apply theory critically to analyse community engagement. (20% total, 5% each).
Weekly Articulated Learning Statements 20% Following face to face or online discussions. Evaluate the impact of their own community engagement experiences (20% total, 5% each).
Caring, Helping and Connecting Statements 27% Use a self-reflective approach to devising, developing and presenting personally relevant assessment products. (27% total, 9% each)
Final Assignment, Part 1 and 2 30% Use a self-reflective approach to devising, developing, and presenting personally relevant assessment products. (2 parts, 15% each).
