Description

Students taking this course will critically examine the concept of community engagement within tertiary studies and how this concept is being implemented in Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, U.K., and U.S. tertiary institutions. This course will integrate academic content on community engagement with students' previous field experiences in response to the Christchurch earthquakes. This will provide students with an overview of how many different fields are contributing to our understanding of, response to, and mitigation of earthquake hazards in the Christchurch area.

FAQs for CHCH101

Q:  Why would I want to enrol in CHCH101?

A:  CHCH101 will give you the opportunity to reflect on your experiences of earthquake relief and tying these experiences to your areas of study.
CHCH101 attempts to dive deeper into those experiences and formalize the reflection process in connection with other texts and readings from the world of volunteer service and community engagement.

Your enrolment in the course will be recorded on your academic transcript and you will be able to reference the formalized nature of your volunteer service on your CV when applying for jobs.

Upon passing CHCH101, the course fees for domestic students (please contact us if you are an international student interested in this course) who completed their service related to the September and Feburary earthquakes in Canterbury will be refunded as a scholarship in recognition of your contribution to earthquake recovery. Also, there will be no cost for materials because all of the texts and readings are going to be online based.

Q:  How do I enrol in CHCH101?

A:  Currently enrolled students should complete a Change of Enrolment via UCStudentWeb.  New students must request an Enrolment Pack by telephoning 0800 827748.

This is a new course and will show as “not valid for the award”.  You should still submit your application, which will be reviewed by the relevant College and either approved or declined.

Q:  Are there any prerequisites for CHCH101 and if so what are they?

A:  There are no prerequisites. But it is expected that all students who enrol will have had a “significant service experience” related to the earthquakes.

Q:  How many hours or days equal a “significant service experience”?

A:  We suggest 20-40 hours, but do not want to deter students who feel their 5-7 hours may not have been enough to count as “significant”. Essentially, you will need to have done enough service to reflect upon your actions because your service experience will serve as a primary source of data for CHCH101. Please contact us if you would like to discuss your service with us.

Q:  What is counted as service?

A:  Have you assisted with the UCSA Student Volunteer Army or worked with another local community group? Have you helped neighbours in your community with clean-up, passing out food, being a shoulder, a listening ear, a friend? Do you feel as though you have provided a contribution for a community following the September and February earthquakes?  If you said yes to any of the above questions, you are eligible to enrol in CHCH101.  Here are a few, specific examples:

1. I have shifted silt with the UCSA Student Volunteer Army.
2. I have helped families move.
3. I have passed food out on my own or with a local community organization (church, community group, school).
4. I have prepared meals for the UCSA Student Volunteer Army.
5. I have prepared meals for the local community.
6. I have worked with the Red Cross doing data entry.
7. I have fundraised with the purpose of CHCHEQ relief.

Q:  Can CHCH101 count towards my qualification?

A:  The answer to this resides with your respective departments and colleges. In many cases the course may count as an elective. In some cases it may not count towards your qualification but you can enrol under a “Certificate of Proficiency”, which will be recorded on your official transcript.

Q:  I have tried to enrol in CHCH101, but I received an error message saying that the course is not valid for my award. What do I do now?

A:  Submit your application.  The course will be approved or declined by the appropriate department/college.

Q:  What if I haven’t done service yet, but want to do it as a part of CHCH101, can I still enroll and how would I go about doing the service part?

A:  Please contact us if you are in this situation.

Q:  How can I become a small group tutor/facilitator for CHCH101?

A:  Please contact us if you are interested in this.

Please contact the Course Coordinators, Dr Billy Osteen (billy.osteen@canterbury.ac.nz) and Mr Lane Perry (lane.perry@pg.canterbury.ac.nz) if you have further questions about CHCH101.
