This course focuses on evidence-based pedagogies and practices for effective teaching and learning of literacy and mathematics from Years 0 to 8. There will be a specific emphasis on the teaching and learning of foundational knowledge and skills in literacy and mathematics. Pre-service teachers will be introduced to pedagogical and assessment practices in mathematics and literacy, while building their own content knowledge. Additionally, content within the course will support and guide learning during their professional practice experiences in year one.
On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1. Identify how to embed aspects and values of cultural competencies as outlined in Tātaiako and Tapasā when teaching, learning and assessing mathematics and literacy. 2. Describe and use effective evidence based pedagogies and practices to meet needs of all learners in mathematics and literacy, particularly foundational knowledge and skills. 3. Examine and demonstrate content knowledge and concepts required for effective teaching in literacy and mathematical learning4. Be familiar with and use curriculum developmental progressions and resources when designing teaching and learning for mathematics and literacy.5. Explore and use a variety of formative and summative assessment practices in mathematics and literacy, with an emphasis on equitable assessment practices for all learners
