Description

This course introduces pre-service teachers to contemporary thinking related to the development and intent of The New Zealand Curriculum for English-medium New Zealand schools. Students will explore The New Zealand Curriculum with a view to understanding the policy framework and its intent. Students will engage with various elements of The New Zealand Curriculum learning areas and explore opportunities for a connected curriculum. The course will complement learning in other courses in the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary), including preparation for Professional Practice.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe the influences contributing to the development of The New Zealand Curriculum in bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand
2. Explain the policy intent of The New Zealand Curriculum relating to teaching and learning in English-medium New Zealand schools
3. Use The New Zealand Curriculum and supporting documents such as Tātaiako, Ka Hikitia and Tapasā and the Ako Waitaha framework to plan teaching and learning experiences.
4. Identify the structure, language and intent of the vision, values, key competencies, learning areas and principles of The New Zealand Curriculum
5. Explore the connections between the learning areas and vision, values, key competencies and principles of The New Zealand Curriculum.
