Description

This course introduces pre-service teachers to what it means to be a teacher in the primary school sector in Aotearoa New Zealand. It explores theories and models of professional identity, professional learning and the expectations of conduct and integrity required to be a member of the teaching profession. It examines the teacher’s role in establishing and maintaining a learning culture that supports diversity and inclusion. This course will complement learning in other courses in the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary).

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Explore, and reflect on, how personal values, biases, beliefs and attitudes may influence your emerging identities as a teacher
2. Identify and describe how experiences have shaped your emerging identities
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the expectations of conduct and integrity that are required as a member of the teaching profession in Aotearoa New Zealand
4. Describe how the relational aspects of teaching support diversity and inclusion within a positive learning-focussed environment that reflects the local community and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand
