Description

This course provides a foundation for developing knowledge and pedagogical approaches within the early childhood curriculum, Te Whariki: He Whariki Matauranga mo nga mokopuna o Aotearoa. This course will support student teachers to develop knowledge of the early childhood curriculum and begin to help them notice the central role of identity and knowledge in fostering interests and learning of tamariki.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of AKOE173, students will be able to:
1. Examine and explain the significance of responsive and reciprocal ngā hononga relationships as core components of  a Te Tiriti o Waitangi based curriculum
2. Articulate the bicultural structure and intent of Te Whāriki (Vision, Principles, Strands)
3. Explain the central role and value of play in the lives and learning of tamariki
4. Notice and explain the central role of identities and knowledges in fostering interests and learning of tamariki.
5. Understand noticing as an element of a larger cycle of curriculum design.
