Description

This course establishes a foundation in theory, concepts, processes and knowledge of children’s development in the early childhood period within the context of culture, whanau/family, and community. Students will acquire an understanding of the processes that take place within and across developmental domains and the risk and protective factors that shape developmental trajectories.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Students will be able to describe developmental approaches to understanding infants, toddlers and young children as applied to early childhood educational contexts in bicultural Aotearoa New Zealand.
2. Students will be able to identify the risk and protective factors that contribute to developmental and educational outcomes in the early childhood years (0-6 years).
3. Students will be able to identify the key tenets of developmental theories and children’s trajectories of change across domains and contexts through early childhood (0 – 6yrs).
