Special Topic
SPECIAL TOPIC: GESTURAL CUESThe communicative act consists not only of speech. Body language, or gestural cues, also play an important, if often overlooked role. This course will introduce students to the study of non-verbal cues and the range of ways gestural cues are used in verbal communication and understanding and the impact of such non-verbal cues on the unfolding nature of social interaction. This will be a collaborative and hands-on course where students will learn to develop hypotheses about the ways in which the production of these cues vary amongst speakers through combining observation with the study of previous academic research. Students will then test these hypotheses by conducting recorded interviews and the transcription, coding and analysis of the visual data.
