This course provides students with opportunities to progress towards the demonstration of appropriate competencies and professional qualities. The course is closely linked to TEPI361, TEPI 362, TECE 359, TECE 361, TECE 358 and TECE 365. Associate Teachers assist the College to assess students' developing competence as a teacher.
On the successful completion of this course students will display a level of competency expected of a beginning teacher by being able to:1. Discuss and apply practice that is aligned with tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand.2. Use teacher inquiry, collaborative problem solving and professional learning to refine professional capability in supporting children’s wellbeing, belonging, communication, contribution and exploration.3. Establish and maintain professional relationships and teacher dispositions focused on the learning and wellbeing of each learner.4. Apply practice that is focused on extending learning, and characterised by respect, inclusion, empathy, collaboration and safety for learners5. Design learning based on curriculum and pedagogical knowledge, assessment information and an understanding of each learner’s strengths, interests, needs, identities, languages and cultures.6. Teach and respond to learners in a intentional and adaptive way to progress learning at an appropriate depth and pace7. Students will be expected to conduct at least one pre-placement visit at their allocated early childhood setting. Full attendance in the early childhood setting for the duration of the practicum, from at least 8.00am - 4.00pm each day, is a requirement. Students will attend a debriefing interview with their PP lecturer after the placement concludes. This interview will be conducted at a University of Canterbury campus or via flexible delivery mechanisms
Once a placement has started, if for reasons beyond their control, students are prevented from completing a placement or suffer significant impairment, they may apply for what is known as “special consideration”. University of Canterbury Special Consideration provisions for this course will apply only to late discontinuation (withdrawal) from a course.A detailed description of special consideration and materials to support the applications process are available at: Special Considerations Process.
