This course supports the development of foundational professional and pedagogical understandings for teaching and learning in schools in Aotearoa New Zealand. Students will engage with the sociocultural context of schooling, Ministry of Education documents, professional frameworks and research that will support the development of positive, inclusive, learning-focussed professional practices and environments in diverse school settings. Students complete a Treaty of Waitangi workshop within the course. The course complements learning in other courses and supports preparation for the first Professional Practice course in the GradDipTchgLn primary and secondary endorsements.

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:1. reflect upon their own cultural locatedness and identify implications for teaching in relation to the articles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi; 2. critically examine their professional learning in relation to the Code and Standards for the Teaching Profession;3. interpret and examine professional practices that support the participation of learners from diverse ethnic and cultural groups;4. interpret and examine teaching and learning strategies that support the development of learner - focused school and classroom cultures; and5. define and interpret planning and assessment principles for diverse teaching contexts and learning environments.

ON-SITE INTENSIVE Students enrolled in TEPI313-24YA1 (D) are required to attend compulsory face-to-face On-site Intensives in Christchurch.Any costs, including travel, accommodation, childcare etc, associated with attendance at the On-site Intensive are met by the student.

Students must pass all assessment requirements to obtain a final passing grade for this course. Final grades will be delivered at an examiners meeting and reported using the UC common grading system.Attendance and Engagement (Distance students)Full attendance and participation in the on-site intensive programme, Tiriti o Waitangi workshops, and noho marae are compulsory requirements of the programme. Students are required to actively engage with all course content and activities including Zoom workshops, lecture recordings, readings, online modules, and any other requirements specified by the course coordinator, in order to meet the learning outcomes of the course.Students are expected to notify lecturers in writing (e.g. email message) prior to their absence, with an explanation. For extended absences (3 or more days), students should apply to the course coordinator. Extended absences must be accompanied by supporting evidence, e.g. medical certificate. Alternative tasks that demonstrate engagement with course content missed due to absences must be completed if provided.Attendance issues and/or lack of engagement with course content and activities may impact your ability to pass the course and/or complete the 'Teaching Professional Practice' associated with this course.
