All courses at 300 level are two semesters with specific emphasis on the development of practice based research within the studio context, and will afford the student the opportunity to develop a large-scale body of studio work. In the first semester, students will be assigned the broad framework for a project and a set of loosely prescribed outcomes in which to define a course an individual study. In the second semester, students will negotiate a wholly individual course of study with their studio lecturer in the form of a Directed Research Proposal (DRP.) There will be rigorous monitoring of student performance through one-on-one lecturer guided evaluation reports. Alongside this there will be consistent informal and formal feedback in small group (peer to peer) and one-to-one (with the lecturer) situations, reading group discussion and studio critiques, which will enable students to develop the means to self-direct and self-manage their learning and research work.
Students who pass PAIN311 will: 1. Have a basic understanding of the nuances of practice based/led research, and of how and why practice in a specific discipline can generate and disseminate knowledge back into that discipline;2. Understand how to engage in primary and secondary research specifically for the purposes of developing a self-initiated a body of work3. Know how to frame, propose, manage and develop a medium-scale practice-based/led research project;4. How to research, frame and articulate a considered critical context in relation to ones developing practice and/or specific projects;5. Have a broad understanding of precedents—both historical and contemporary—for painters engaging in practitioner-initiated, speculative and critical practices;
