Description

This course will enable students to gain the health assessment, bioscience and pharmacology knowledge and skills required to understand disease processes, the rationale for interventions and how drugs affect the body.

Learning Outcomes

1.   Understand and apply knowledge of human anatomy, physiology and homeostasis to health assessment.
2.   Demonstrate skills in health assessment and documenting the findings of physical examination.
3.   Understand and apply knowledge of the transmission and control of organisms.
4.   Apply knowledge of pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and pharmacogenetics across the lifespan.
5.   Critically apply the legal, sociocultural and ethical principles surrounding drug administration and use.

Subject to approval of the Head of School of Health Sciences.

Please note some classes are held at the University of Canterbury Dovedale campus and some are at the Ara Institute of Canterbury Clinical Practice suites. Also please note that classes may be held until 1900hrs (7pm).

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Online exams and critical thinking exercises 40% Learning outcomes assessed: 1, 3, 4, 5
Health assessment a) Practical work = pass/fail (one opportunity to repeat practical work). A pass in the practical work is required to pass this course. If practical work is not passed using the two opportunities available a fail grade for the HLTH466 course is awarded. Learning outcomes assessed: 1, 2.
Examination 60% Learning outcomes assessed: 1, 4, 5.
