This is the first of two intermediate German language courses. This course aims at extending vocabulary and grammatical structures which will be used to discuss and write about simple topics in contemporary German and German-speaking culture and society.
This course is offered both as a distance course and an on-campus course. If you are a distance student, you will have the same course content as the on-campus students. You can access the life teaching session via Livestream and Zoom link, and you can actively participate in the classes. If you cannot attend all four on-campus sessions, you will have access to the archived lectures.To connect with students of the on-campus course, be part of the class, you will get buddied up with on-campus students. Students will acquire skills in all four areas of the language (reading, writing, speaking and listening). By the end of the course, you should be able to: Read intermediate level literature (level A2/B1) and short newspaper articles in German.Students will practice writing intensively and should be able to write a 200-word essay in German about a contemporary topic.The average student will be able to hold a conversation about everyday events and politics in German. Students' listening comprehension should reach a level where they can understand German television and radio programs. A student in this course will also acquire knowledge about cultural and socio-economic aspects during a particular period in German history. This will accompany the language learning and complete the skills and knowledge a university German program is expected to provide.By learning a foreign language and engaging in its history and culture, students will develop more understanding of global conditions and will become competent in engaging with global and multicultural contexts. This will help the language students to develop knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.
