Description

The course explores the interactions between the world’s forests and human societies, the benefits derived by humans and the need for forest management.

The aim of this course is to provide the student with an overall and integrated picture of the relationship between people and forests from a historical and global perspective. The course will introduce students to the dynamic relationship between forests, environment and society; examine the nature, location and significance of the world's forest and their relationship to the environment; introduce students to the historical and current societal attitudes to forest use; and provide an overview of goods and services provided by forests. Students will also learn to identify key tree species and describe their characteristics and use.

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

- Understand the changing relationship between forests, environment and society;
- Be able to describe the nature, and location of the world's forests;
- Understand the significance of the world's forests and their relationship to the environment;
- Be able to discuss differing historical and current societal attitudes towards forest use; and
- Be able to identify a range of key tree species

Assessment

Assessment comprises essays based on the 8 chapters of Forestry in a Global Context, plus a written description of 15 tree species supported by digital photographs.

Notes

This course is offered as a distance-learning paper and is suitable for students who are undertaking the first year of the Bachelor of Forestry Science degree at another campus or for students who wish to take one final paper for credit to a degree and are located outside Christchurch.

Students who are based in Christchurch and/or taking other courses on campus should enrol in FORE111 - Trees, Forests and Environment.
