Description

Soil and groundwater contamination; aqueous and non-aqueous contaminant fate and transport; containment methods; remediation options; New Zealand regulation and risk applications.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students will have demonstrated:

1. A knowledge of biogeochemistry relevant to contaminated site assessment and remediation
2. A knowledge of contaminant transport processes, containment options, and associated calculations
3. A knowledge of risk assessment concepts as applied to contaminated site management
4. An appreciation for integrated engineering decision-making through examination of case studies

Timetable Note

This course will be delivered in a traditional lecture format with supporting tutorials that will provide you with activities to reinforce your learning. Because classes will be small it is expected that all students will engage actively in the class by asking questions and contributing to the discussions.  Attendance at all classes is strongly recommended although the lectures will be recorded through ECHO360.

Because this is a final year elective course it is our expectation that you are a motivated and independent learner. You will seek support from the lecturer as well as from digital and physical resources as you see a need.

1. You cannot pass this course unless you achieve a mark of at least 40% in the final exam. A student who narrowly fails to achieve 40% in the exam, may still may be eligible for a P (pass grade) in the course if they have shown consistently high class attendance and have performed very well in the internal assessment items.

2. All assessments must be submitted by the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted. If a student is unable to complete and submit an assignment by the deadline due to personal circumstances beyond their control they should discuss this with the lecturer involved as soon as possible.

3. All projects must be done in pairs or individually.

4. Students who are eligible for Special Consideration for the final examination will be provided with an Oral Examination in the week designated for extra examination.

Notes

This course relies on most of the concepts taught in ENCN281 Environmental Engineering.  Familiarity with concepts from ENCN253 Soil Mechanics and ENCN353 Geotechnical Engineering will be relevant.
