Special project in Construction Management Engineering
Upon completion of this course, students will have reliably demonstrated the ability to conduct medium sized research projects for the architectural, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.Students choose one suitable topic based on the discussion with academic supervisors. The course involves a collaborative process between the student and academic supervisors where regular meetings will occur to guide and refine the student's goals, progress and work. Students are required to submit a formal research report after they complete the research project. Potential research topics can be determined within the following areas, including (but are not limited to):1. Building information modelling2. Productivity and cost analysis3. Construction engineering4. Project delivery methods and procurement strategies5. Construction technologies6. Construction health and safety7. Green building design and assessment8. Applications of computer vision and machine learning to construction9. Digital twin and smart infrastructureSpecific research topics will place emphasis on knowledge discovery, innovation, and applications to the AEC industry. Students are expected to gain research skills for possible future research career (e.g., PhD) and relevant knowledge and skills for future career in the construction industry.
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to:have a good understanding of the knowledge gaps in the AEC industry;define research questions; choose suitable research methods;collect and analyse data; and have a good understanding of the academic and practical implications of the research findings.

The course can be completed over two semesters or S2 only.It is expected that a student will typically spend about 160 hours on learning material and completing the research project for this course.

Mid semester progress report should cover the progress made in the following aspects: (1) research questions are clearly defined(2) literature review is completed(3) data collection has commencedFinal research project report should consist of the following elements:(1) Introduction(2) Literature review(3) Methodology(4) Results(5) Discussion and conclusions To pass this course, you should achieve at least 40% of the mid semester progress report and 50% of the final research report.
