Description

In this course the selection and acquisition of construction equipment is covered. During the course, students will develop a better understanding of the factors affecting the selection, scheduling and use of heavy construction equipment. The students will learn to apply engineering fundamentals, construction engineering and management knowledge and construction engineering and management knowledge from this course to solve problems encountered with construction equipment and to design construction processes that involve the use of equipment.

Overview of concepts to be covered:

• The selection and acquisition of construction equipment.

•  Application of engineering fundamentals and economics to performance characteristics and production of equipment.

• Heavy construction methods and economic applications.

• Application of heavy equipment processes to a real-world problem.

This course is designed as a hybrid course which means you will be required to do some online activities instead of attendance at certain class periods. These online activities mostly include watching online lectures, modules, and sample problems. The objectives of such assignments are to:

• allow students to move through the material at their own pace, possibly stopping and replaying challenging material or speeding up or skipping material that is already known or moving too slowly.

• allow additional schedule flexibility for both students and instructors
Be ready to take notes while watching the video. When assigned, students should finish watching the video before the next in class period. The in class period will then focus on problem based learning.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the conclusion of this course you should be able to:
  • recognise types of equipment
  • describe how the equipment operates
  • know appropriate and safe uses for equipment types
  • estimate cost, capacity, and productivity by using information that is typically available in the owner's manuals and guidebooks
  • select appropriate equipment from a fleet for use on a construction project
  • be able to apply these concepts to a construction site.
  • approximately price a heavy equipment process.
  • apply optimization and productivity techniques to a construction project.

Timetable Note

This course is run in block mode with two, 2-day blocks. The four days will be delivered through interactive lectures, examining case studies and in-class activities. In between class time, content and assignments will be made available online for students to complete and submit online.
