Description

This course teaches practical skills in digital sound for musicians, filmmakers, game developers, aspiring "bedroom producers", and anyone interested in working with sound in the digital domain. Students learn how to match sounds with moving images, how to edit and manipulate sound and MIDI files in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), and fundamental concepts and terminology that enable them to communicate effectively with music technology experts. Instruction includes lectures and hands-on studio tutorial sessions.

• Fundamentals of digital audio recording and editing
• Efficient and creative use of industry standard DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), e.g.
Reaper and ProTools
• Matching sound to action
• Sound design skills
• Creating music with MIDI and virtual (software-based) instruments
• Microphone types and uses
• Managing signal flow and analogue to digital conversion
• Optimal audio configuration in the Mac OSX operating system

Learning Outcomes

  • Knowledge of fundamental sound design techniques
  • Basic proficiency with industry-standard DAW applications

  • Practical understanding of signal flow and analogue-to-digital conversion
  • Ability to communicate effectively with composers and sound professionals through
    acquired knowledge of key concepts and terminology in music and sound for screen
