Description

This course aims to promote knowledge and understanding of the anatomical structures and physiological processes involved in speech production and perception. The main goal is to familiarize students with the basic terms and concepts of the human speech mechanism and facilitate future studies of disorders in speech, voice, language, and hearing or related disciplines.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
English grammar test 07 Apr 2014 35% This test will assess students' (i) understanding of the structural characteristics of English, and (ii) ability to analyse sentences at the clause, phrase and word levels. The test will contain (i) a number of short questions about the nature and function of certain sentence elements, and (ii) a number of sentence analysis tasks of the same kind as the class exercises.
Child case study 21 May 2014 30% For the child study, each student will record, transcribe, and analyse a sample of a preschool child's conversational language using SALT software, and report on the child's language development.
5 05 Jun 2014 35% This test will cover the content of the lectures on language acquisition, and will assess students' understanding of the theories, processes, and stages of language development, and of the social and cognitive factors that may impact the process of language acquisition
