Description

Introduction to 1) the structure of the English language, with an emphasis on developing practical analytical skills; and 2) speech and language development in typically-developing children, with a focus on the preschool years.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
English grammar test 27 Mar 2013 35% This test will assess students' (i) understanding of the structural characteristics of English, and (ii) ability to analyse sentences at the clause, phrase and word levels. The test will contain (i) a number of short questions about the nature and function of certain sentence elements, and (ii) a number of sentence analysis tasks of the same kind as the class exercises.
Child case study 15 May 2013 30% For the child study, each student will record, transcribe, and analyse a sample of a preschool child's conversational language using SALT software, and report on the child's language development.
Language acquisition test 29 May 2103 35% This test will cover the content of the lectures on language acquisition, and will assess students' understanding of the theories, processes, and stages of language development, and of the social and cognitive factors that may impact the process of language acquisition.
