Description

This course introduces content, pedagogy and practices associated with teaching and learning in, through and about the Arts and Health and Physical Education (HPE) in the New Zealand Curriculum (2007). Students will engage with content that will support the design of effective, inclusive classroom and learning programmes that maximise learners’ physical, social, cultural and emotional safety and promote Hauora/ well-being in four levels (1-4) of the New Zealand Curriculum. The course will complement learning in other courses in the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning (Primary Endorsement).

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Describe the characteristics of positive learning environments for the Arts and Health and Physical Education that maximise learners’ physical, social, cultural, emotional and spiritual safety and promote Hauora/well-being;    
2. Apply knowledge, skills and understandings developed within course workshops within high-quality learning design for the Arts and Health and Physical Education;
3. Design teaching, learning and assessment activities for the Arts and Health and Physical Education that demonstrate knowledge of curriculum, effective pedagogy, and learning progressions; and
4. Identify and create high-quality resources to support teaching and learning for the Arts and Health and Physical Education.

Important Course Information

On-Campus Course Requirements

Attendance and participation within all workshops and practical-focussed lectures, and weekly engagement with all online course content, are requirements to meet the course learning outcomes and be awarded a grade for submitted assessments.  Students are expected to notify lecturers via email about an absence, with an explanation. For extended absences (2 or more weeks of sessions), students need to contact the course coordinator. Alternative tasks that demonstrate engagement with workshop content missed due to absences must be completed to a satisfactory standard and submitted to the course lecturer if provided. Students are expected to check their UC email weekly for course communication.
