Description

Compulsory workshop course for Electrical and Electronic Engineering students and Computer Engineering students

The aims of this course are to:

• Understand safety requirements for sheet metal operations, including personal safety and workshop safety
• Use sheet metal hand tools including files, drills and cutters
• Measure and cut out a drill gauge to tolerances of plus or minus 1 mm
• Measure and mark out a set of simple sheet metal components, using datum lines, markers, punches, vernier callipers
• Use of drill press machines, setting these up and operating them
• Use manual bending and folding presses to fabricate a simple construction

Learning Outcomes

  • At the conclusion of this course you should be able to:

  • LO1: Use basic workshop tools to accurately fabricate metal components (WA3, WA5)

  • LO2: Perform engineering measurements (WA3, WA5)

  • LO3: Work safely with basic machine shop equipment (WA5, WA6)

  • LO4: Appreciate the time, skill and attention required to fabricate components (WA6, WA5)

  • LO5: Interpret simple engineering drawings (WA5)
