More than 1500 high school students from around the country took the opportunity to find out what the University of Canterbury is all about during an Open Day.

The Open Day, held on 8 July, gave prospective students and their families a chance to check out what it was like to be a student at UC through a wide range of showcase events.

Community Relations Manager John MacDonald said using the same evaluation method as other years, this year’s Open Day attracted more people than ever before.

“We had about 1500 secondary school students on campus for the day. They all attended several sessions and the lecturers were coming up to us afterwards really excited about the turnout. I spoke too with some parents who were impressed by the academic staff they had dealings with.”

Visitors got to meet lecturers and attend introductory lectures; gather in-depth information on subjects, qualifications and scholarships; and were able to tour lecture theatres, labs, libraries, sport facilities and Halls of Residence.

The Winter Wonderland Market offered some tasty treats and boutique shopping; the Christchurch Town Crier was on hand to make public announcements; and the College of Arts’ flash mob performances provided entertainment in the North Arts lecture theatres.
