Many PhD students at Spatial Engineering Research Centre (SERC) have an Electrical and Electronic Engineering background but some have other academic backgrounds. If we find mutual interest in a topic, we'll find you the most appropriate academic department and co-supervisor to work with. Find out about doing a PhD with us.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree involves extensive, sustained and original research and study, with the results being presented in a thesis which will contribute to the intellectual knowledge of the field. Enrolment in a PhD requires completion of an Honours or Master’s degree to a high standard (typically first-class or second-class division one). You must have completed an independent research project/dissertation or thesis as part of your previous degree/s.

Many of SERC's PhD students have an Electrical and Electronic Engineering background, but some have a background in Computer Science and Software Engineering or Mechanical Engineering. Occasionally we have students from other areas of science. If we find there is mutual interest in a topic, SERC will find the most appropriate academic department and co-supervisor for you to work with.

The first step is to read about our research and see if your areas of interest are covered by SERC's research.

Next, find out which SERC staff are involved in your area of interest and get in contact with them to see if there is mutual interest in a research topic.

  • Browse the list of SERC staff to find potential supervisors.

Then investigate the scholarships and other support that are available to help you study at SERC.
