On September 1, the NZIGE carried out a full day workshop on risk assessment based on the Biosafety Forecast Service prototype version 1 at the ‘Holistic Foundations for Assessment and Regulation of Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms’ international biosafety course, held in Tromsø, Norway.

The two week course is attended by representatives from developing countries and is aimed to provide participants with information and training in GMO issues.

The NZIGE workshop involved a practical case study of an application for the propagation of genetically modified papaya. Groups of participants used the prototype of the Biosafety Forecast Service, an interactive risk assessment guide and database developed by the NZIGE, to evaluate the application and debate their conclusions.

This exercise also acted as a feedback session in which the NZIGE could assess the usefulness of the Biosafety Forecast Service and its requirements in terms of function and design.
