Imagining the future of the General Practice was never going to be an easy task - especially tackling it in one weekend! Four teams of students from across Canterbury were given 48 hours to reimagine the way GPs were using digital tools and delivering virtual consultations.

Two teams, in particular, impressed the judges. Medsolve pitched an innovative concept to enable stronger doctor-patient relationships. The ‘Home Hub’ would allow patients and doctors to check in more regularly, make better use of smart devices and connect patients to a supportive community going through similar treatment.

Students Reimagine the Future of the General Practice 2 One of the winning teams, Florence’s Nightingales pitching their "HealthPod" solution to a panel of judges.

Florence’s Nightingales focused their attention on improving access to health monitoring and improving the care of patients with chronic conditions. The team’s ‘Health Pod’ concept involved a free to use, remote monitoring hub which would be located within the places people frequent in their everyday life, such as supermarkets, libraries or the Marae. It would allow people with chronic conditions to regularly monitor key health indicators and provide GPs with more information on patients, leading to improved care and better outcomes.

Due to the support of our two Challenge Partners, Pegasus Health and ChristchurchNZ, the teams had opportunities to engage with physicians, practice managers and executives who have been at the forefront of the digital transformation of the General Practice.

“The number of industry experts who were involved was great! It really made it feel like something worthwhile to be doing as they were obviously interested in change and valued our ideas.” - Digital Doctors Participant

“I am aiming to work in healthcare, it was great to have a chance to share ideas and interact with experts from the industry.” - Digital Doctors Participant

Delivered in partnership with ChirstchurchNZ and Pegasus Health, the Digital Doctors Challenge was a fantastic opportunity for the student teams to demonstrate their creativity and innovation, grow their professional networks and win prize money!
