Studying towards a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours

Hoping to head into the agricultural sector, Matthew’s early experiences in engineering through high school have inspired him towards a career solving some of the challenges of our environmental resources.

"My interest in mathematics and physics motivated me to study Engineering. I enjoy the logical thinking process to come to one definitive answer, whether in the sense of problem-solving or computation," he says.

Knowing about UC’s reputation for Engineering studies, Matthew made the move from Waikato for his uni studies.

The region itself also proved to be a bonus for Matthew, calling Christchurch "an ideal city for student life".

"I have enjoyed the close proximity to the beaches, along with a comprehensive public transport system which makes the city seem small. The flat landscape allows me to partake in many forms of exercise in my spare time which also makes for an easy commute on a bike. It’s a new and modern city which has many exciting prospects for young students to explore."

Matthew chose to stay at Rochester and Rutherford Hall to get the full new-student experience at UC.

"When I visited R&R on Open Day I was drawn in by the friendliness of the people, the common spaces and other facilities, and the convenient location. I also liked the extensive academic support programme offered.

"On arrival, I was welcomed by the principal Stephen and the team of friendly tutors. This, as well as orientation programmes and introductions provided by the hall, has helped me to settle in and make connections with people from all around the country," he says.

Definitely the fellow people of R&R have made Matthew’s first year of uni even more enjoyable, and he highly advises other students to get involved as a great way to "broaden your horizons".

"The abundance of friendly faces has made it easy to settle in as well as get involved in other opportunities the hall offers such as social sport and academic support. Even in the short time I have been here, I know I have made some strong connections."

As a highly active person, Matthew has also made a point of joining the UC Rugby Club, and plays other social sports offered through R&R.

He is also a part of the Emerging Leaders’ Development Programme, which recognises students with leadership potential and gets them involved in workshops and projects in the city.
