What’s been your UC highlight so far?

There have been tons, but if I had to pick one I’d say it was going to China for six weeks for the Management 228 course. I went with 30 other students. We attended classes at a Chinese university and participated in a second language programme. Then we went to Shanghai and Beijing and visited several New Zealand businesses that operate over there.

Most inspiring moment of the trip?

One night we went to the top of one of the tallest buildings in Shanghai. There were skyscrapers as far as the eye could see and the whole city was lit up like a light show. It made me realise how small New Zealand is. The trip changed my whole perspective and gave me a new appreciation for life.

What have you been up to back at UC?

I’m super passionate about business and entrepreneurship. I hang out at UCE, the Centre for Entrepreneurship, for about eight hours a day! I do all their business case challenges. I love being part of that scene and some amazing things have come out of it.

Tell us about your various initiatives!

I've started three businesses since coming to UC. I have my own gelato store, ‘Charlato’ which I got up and running in about two weeks. I’m also developing a mobile app for small businesses called Vinta with support from a global company. Last, I’ve started ‘Foodies’, a food safety consultancy. I wouldn't have been able to achieve any of these if it wasn't for the staff and resources at UCE.

"The entrepreneurship scene here is unparalleled. I would highly recommend UC to any high school student who’s passionate about start-ups."

You’re involved in the running of a few clubs too?

I’m the president of a blockchain and crypto club which has about 200 members, and I’m on the exec for BrewSoc. I’m also the financial and workshop director for 180 degrees consulting which is another club run within the UCE. There’s an endless array of extra-curricular opportunities here. Over summer I helped build a high school in Uganda with Purpose Projects, a great student initiative that came out of UCE, and I’m also part of Global China Connection so I can continue to build on my love of China.

It sounds like you’ve really soaked up the UC experience!

I truly love everything that UC has to offer. It's the student culture that drives this place. There’s an incredible community feel and sense of pride when students band together. I’m so glad I came!

What’s made UC the right choice for you?

I’m a business-minded person, and UC has given me access to a ton of resources. The entrepreneurship scene here is unparalleled. I would highly recommend UC to any high school student who’s passionate about start-ups. You'll learn heaps of great skills, meet inspiring people and maybe even graduate with your own business… or three!
