CHRIS. PHD IN SPORTS SCIENCE.

Chris's Story

UC gave Chris the opportunity to become the CEO of his own business. Find out how he's accelerating his interest in sports science!

I've created a start-up company called Komodo Monitr with two other UC students. It's a software product that provides a platform for athlete monitoring.

The support around entrepreneurship is world-class. I've been to other universities and never had that kind of exposure before. It's world-renowned from a research perspective and the staff are amazing too.

What's your PhD all about?

I'm looking at ways to use athletes data to reduce injuries. Right now athletes wear some very clever devices that gather a whole range of metrics such as distance covered and top speeds. I get to take all this information and find ways to use it. I love it because I'm helping athletes get to a stage where they're reaching their potential. It's not a dust collector PhD!

You've started a business too?

I've created a start-up company called Komodo Monitr with two other UC students. It's a software product that provides a platform for athlete monitoring. It records and analyses data so we can then turn it into key insights.

How did that come about?

I'd always wanted to turn my research into something I can apply in the real world. I stumbled across the Centre of Entrepreneurship's start-up programme. We did a pitch competition and won. We also won the entré 85K start-up challenge and received $17,500 cash and $10,000 of in-kind services.

Wow! Is Komodo Monitr out in the marketplace now?

Yes, it's a fully-fledged business. We've signed up a number of Canterbury based high performance sports for our test validation, so we can prove the product and get market acceleration.

Has UC's backing made a difference?

100%. I come from a pure sports science background with no business understanding at all. The scholarship gave me 10 solid weeks of intense mentoring. With that I was able to take the initial idea and turn it into a product. Having UC behind you is a pretty good building block!

What makes UC a good place to study?

The support around entrepreneurship is world-class. I've been to other universities and never had that kind of exposure before. It's world-renowned from a research perspective and the staff are amazing too. I came here absolutely on my own and everyone has been so welcoming and supportive.

How have you changed at UC?

UC has really broadened my horizons. I came here thinking I'd get my PhD and become a lecturer. I never dreamed I'd start a business and become a CEO! Coming to UC has been the best decision I've ever made.
