Abel's Story

With the opportunity to meet new people and experience different cultures, UC has been the perfect match for Abel. Hear more about his journey from Zimbabwe to Christchurch.

UC Careers helped me land an auditing internship which involved flying around New Zealand last year - and I really enjoyed it.

I looked at all the universities in New Zealand and chose UC because I liked the way it was so closely knit. I wanted to come somewhere that would be easy to get around, that had its own campus distinct from the city.

You're from Zimbabwe – what made you choose UC?

I looked at all the universities in New Zealand and chose UC because I liked the way it was so closely knit. I wanted to come somewhere that would be easy to get around, that had its own campus distinct from the city.

How have you found the experience so far?

I was a bit nervous at first but I've adjusted really well. I started in the halls where I met people who are still my mates today. UC has a really friendly culture. It was a shock for me actually. I expected everyone to be a lot more closed off, but it's been really easy to meet people. Kiwis in general always have something to talk about!

What fun stuff have you been up to?

I play rugby for a local club and am a part of Engage Canterbury. I'm also on the Cantabs exec. We go along to support all the Crusaders games. It's a lot of fun! The clubs are a great way to enjoy time off from hitting the books and you meet a lot of people too.

How have you found the academics?

Challenging but very flexible. All the lectures are recorded so if you can't make it to class you can catch up later. At first we were mainly learning theories, but now that I'm in third year most of our learning is applied to actual cases. It makes everything click. I enjoy my lecturers too. They're really approachable.

You've done some travels – tell us about that!

I've travelled most of Southern Africa and been to the UK, Middle East, US and Canada. Last summer I went to Thailand for 6 weeks with Engage. We taught English in a pretty remote part of the country. Going somewhere with a different language and a whole new culture was a big challenge for me. It was definitely out of my comfort zone!

What are your dreams for the future?

UC Careers helped me land an Auditing Internship which involved flying around New Zealand last year - and I really enjoyed it. Going forward, I really want to get into auditing. I'd love to travel and get global work experience, and auditing is perfect for that. I really enjoy doing new things. When you're travelling you're always meeting new people and encountering new challenges. It's a great way to get out there.
