Subscribing to your My Timetable calendar

What is iCalendar?

iCalendar, often referred to as iCal, is a standard internet calendar format that enables users to create and share electronic calendars across different computers and different programs.

As the format continues to grow in popularity, many companies have chosen to use the iCalendar standard. Apple's iCal, a personal calendar application that runs on the Mac OS X operating system, is one of many programs that currently use this format. Others include Mozilla Sunbird and Microsoft Outlook.

The My Timetable iCalendar links allow you to view your timetable in your preferred calendar application, or even share your timetable with friends. The iCalendar links are private addresses unique to you. Do not share these addresses with others unless you want them to see all the events on your timetable.

Should I use the https link or the webcal link?

The https link encrypts the web traffic between the My Timetable servers and your calendar application. Usually more steps are required to subscribe to an icalendar link offered via https. We advise you to use this link if you have concerns about the security of the network between your calendar application and the My Timetable servers. For example, from a unsecured wireless connection.

The webcal link is not encrypted though is generally easier to subscribe with your calendar application. Generally, you just click the link and your calendar application will ask to subscribe. The timetable contains no personally identifiable information such as usernames or student ids, just a list of events you're timetabled to attend. Some calendar applications do not currently support subscribing of calendars via https, such as Gooogle Calendar. In these cases the webcal link is your only option.

Subscribing versus importing

Subscribing allow you to read your timetable in your calendar application, but you cannot modify them from your calendar application. A subscription will periodically check for changes, such as new events or allocation changes. If your calendar application allows you to set this interval please set it between 8 and 24 hours.

Importing download a copy of the timetable and imports the events into your calendar application. You will not receive updates to your timetable over the course of the semester.

Is my calendar application in sync with My Timetable?

The calendar subscription is only a snapshot of you timetable taken at the time of the last refresh. You should always login to My Timetable to see your current activity allocations. Some calendar applications allow you to set the refresh interval. If your calendar application does, a setting between every 8 and 24 hours is advised.
