Qualifications
Overview
Studying Law at UC will involve looking at legal systems, policies, cases, legal material, as well as the wider social, political, and historical contexts in which our laws exist.
This degree will give you the ability to think critically, and analyse facts and issues in order to persuade by logical argument.
- Work on real issues and cases through internships and community work.
- Take part in mooting, debating, competitions, and other events.
- An important part of your studies will be exploring biculturalism and Indigenous knowledge.
Bachelor of Laws
UC offers a Bachelor of Laws, which focuses on contemporary legal systems and policies.
Freedom of choice in first-year Law allows you to try various subjects before making a final decision about the degree or degrees you intend to complete. Those completing a double degree will choose non-Law courses needed for progression in their other degree.
Good grades in LAWS101 and LAWS110 are necessary to advance into second-year Law courses.
The third and fourth years are made up of optional courses in Law. These courses cover a broad range of areas including:
- commercial law
- family law
- media law
- international law
- human rights law
- law and medicine
- property and environmental law.
You may also take other highly specialised courses, such as law and sport, trade law, trial advocacy, gender and the law, and law of the sea.
If you achieve a satisfactory standard in your first two years of Law study, you may be invited to enter the Honours programme in your fourth year.
Through your studies you will learn skills like critical and creative thinking, analysis, writing, editing, and research. These skills will get you ready to work in the legal profession as well as in careers outside of the courtroom.
Some career pathways could include:
- Barrister/Solicitor
- Local government
- Media and communication
- Public sector.
