In his seminal paper "On unitary representations of the inhomogeneous Lorentz group", Wigner uncovered a beautiful connection between the classification of particles and spacetime symmetries. However, almost eighty years onwards, certain aspects of the theory are still not well understood. In this presentation, after reviewing the main results of Wigner's work, I will attempt to fill in some of the missing details and discuss possible extensions beyond the present paradigm.
