Enhancing High Energy Astrophysical Neutrino Detection with IceCube
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has opened up a new window on neutrino astronomy and cosmic ray physics. Completed in 2011 and with new upgrades on the horizon, IceCube is in a current era of improving analysis techniques and testing new surface detector hardware. Our work at UC sits in this intersection, as we try to answer the question: how well can we use existing and future surface detector technology to reject background events, and in doing so increase our sensitivity to an astrophysical neutrino flux in IceCube?
In my talk I will summarise the how and why of neutrino astronomy, and discuss the improvements we can make to IceCube analysis.
