Supramolecular Assemblies Based on Pyridylhydrazone and Imidazolylimine Schiff base ligands

Abstract

Metallo-supramolecular chemistry provides an avenue for the synthesis of complex architectures from simple starting components.1 Discrete metal-organic complexes can exhibit many fascinating properties such as magnetic bistability2 or molecular porosity.3 The inclusion of metal ions allows for magnetic properties to be incorporated into the assembly, while modification of ligand functionality can play an important role in how these assemblies pack in three dimensions.  In this talk, recent work on Fe(II) grids of the form [Fe4L4] and Fe(II) helicates and mesocates of the form [Fe2L3]X4 (X = BF4-, OTf- or PF6-) will be presented.4 These supramolecular assemblies display spin crossover (SCO).5,6 SCO is a form of magnetic bistability and the behaviour was probed using magnetic susceptibility and absolute reflectivity measurements. Where appropriate, molecular porosity was investigated with gas sorption measurements.
