Abstract
Prof Mike Reid
Lanthanide Electronic Structure, Spectroscopy, and Applications
Materials doped with lanthanide (rare-earth) ions are widely used in optical applications, such as phosphors, lasers, and optical amplifiers. An understanding of the electronic structure and radiative and non-radiative excited-state processes in these materials is crucial to the development of such applications. In collaboration with Jon Wells, I am focussing on refining our understanding, with a view to assisting applications development in the areas of quantum information and bio-imaging. In this presentation I will give a brief overview, and some of our recent results.
Prof Rudi Marquez
Colours, Bugs and Drugs – What a Trip
Work in our group has been focused on the development of new interdisciplinary approaches for treating and diagnosing disease. Using a combination of structural biology, rational drug design, organic and medicinal chemistry we have been to tackle some pressing issues in diabetes, infection and parasitology. As part of this lecture, I will give an overview of our journey, and include some of our recent successes (and failures).
Biography
Rudi and Mike kick off the first of this Series of Joint Research Awareness Seminars designed to share current endeavours being undertaken in the School.
